PRESS RELEASE
PUBLIC CONSULTATIONS ON ELECTORAL REFORMS
The Ministry of Justice reaffirms the Coalition Government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and public participation in the review of Fiji’s electoral laws. The Government values the voices of its citizens and recognizes their right to be heard. It is doing its best to ensure that Fijians from all walks of life have the opportunity to contribute to this important democratic process.
In response to concerns regarding the timeframe for public submissions, the Ministry wishes to clarify that the Fiji Law Reform Commission, the Electoral Commission, and the Ministry of Justice will undertake an extensive public consultation process. A number of teams will be deployed across the country over the next two to three weeks to engage directly with communities and hear their views on the current electoral system and legislation. On that note, we acknowledge the coordination between the various government agencies, in particular the Ministry of Itaukei Affairs, Ministry of Women Children Social Protection and Ministry of Rural Development.
Additionally, public submissions are welcomed online via the Fiji Law Reform Commission website at https://flrc.gov.fj/submission-form/, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity in this process.
The Government recognizes that there are pivotal provisions relating to the electoral system, processes, and rights contained in the Constitution. A review of these provisions therefore necessarily forms part of the review of the Electoral Act 2014, the Electoral (Registration of Voters) Act 2012, and the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding & Disclosures) Act 2013. However, it is important to note that any recommendations to amend electoral provisions in the Constitution will require a separate review process in accordance with the legal framework governing constitutional changes.
The Coalition Government stands firm in its dedication to develop an electoral system, as well as electoral processes and rights, that are fair, democratic, and responsive to the aspirations and interests of the Fijian people.
We encourage all citizens to participate in the consultation process and to make their voices heard.
