December 12, 2024In addition to speaking at the 9th Session of the Committee on Statistics High-Level Segment on Wednesday, 11 December, the Minister for Justice, Hon. Siromi Turaga spoke at a Side Event on Unlocking the Power of Civil Registration Data for Effective Governance.
The Minister for Justice remarked on Fiji’s leadership in improving Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems in the Asia Pacific. Highlighting Fiji’s commitment to universal CRVS, the Minister noted initiatives like the Parental Assistance Payment Programme (PAPP) and Inflation Mitigation Assistance (IMA), which significantly increased birth registrations. Fiji also became the first country to conduct a comprehensive inequality assessment in 2023, providing valuable insights for future policy improvements. Efforts to digitize registration processes, such as mobile units and digital birth notifications, were also discussed. The Minister concluded that Fiji’s progress serves as a model for the region, contributing to global CRVS goals.
The side event discussion emphasized the critical role of digitalization in achieving universal registration of vital events. It explored ongoing efforts by countries to streamline and enhance CRVS (Civil Registration and Vital Statistics) processes through digital innovation, integrating these efforts into broader government digital transformation initiatives. The discussion also highlighted the continuous utilization of civil registration data to inform and shape evidence-based policymaking.
