CEDAW Committee Members Invited to A Courtesy Meeting and Briefing Fijian Ministry of Justice
April 10, 2025In 2026, Fiji will be subjected to an evaluation to assess its compliance with the international standards on combating money laundering, terrorist financing and other financial crimes. The evaluation will be conducted by the Asia Pacific Group on Money Laundering (APG) and a team of international assessors.
The Minister for Justice, Honorable Siromi Turaga, recently met with a delegation from the APG secretariat which was led by the APG Co-Chair Mr Mitsutoshi Kajikawa this morning to discuss Fiji’s 2026 APG evaluation.
The Minister for Justice assured the APG delegation of the Fijian Government’s commitment to the upcoming evaluation process and briefed them on Fiji’s preparations for this important process. The meeting also discussed strategic issues relating to Fiji’s laws and the capacity of key institutions that needed to be improved before the 2026 APG evaluation.
The APG delegation also held meetings with other key Ministers and Heads of agencies such as the Minister for Policing, Attorney-General, Commissioner of Police, Acting Director of Public Prosecution, Governor RBF, Director Financial Intelligence Unit and Acting Deputy Commissioner FICAC.
The Ministry of Justice, through the Permanent Secretary for Justice, is providing oversight of Fiji’s preparations for the 2026 APG evaluation.
Furthermore, the National Anti-Money Laundering Council, which is chaired by the Permanent Secretary for Justice, has set up a Working Group consisting of key officials from across the agencies to coordinate government agencies’ preparation for and participation in the 2026 APG evaluation.
The Minister for Justice, Honorable Siromi Turaga said that “compliance with the international anti-money laundering standards is crucial because it ensures that we have strong laws and institutions to fight complex financial crimes and to safeguard our financial sector, businesses and people.” Honorable Turaga further added that “the 2026 APG evaluation provides an opportunity for the Government to assess and strengthen its laws and institutional framework on combating serious crimes in Fiji.
