In order to resolve the ongoing problem of Fijians who are still on the Police Blacklist, the Honourable Minister for Justice, Mr: Siromi Turaga and the Acting Commissioner of Police, Mr: Juki Fong Chew met today.
The main topic of discussion was to ensure there was justice, openness, and that those impacted was treated with dignity and respect.
The Honourable Minister for Justice emphasized the importance to conduct thorough examination of the standards and processes by which people are added to the Police Blacklist.
This is to ensure the procedure is open, equitable, and just. It was also emphasized on how crucial it is for the public and the police to communicate clearly. There will be an attempt to raise public knowledge of the consequences of being placed on the blacklist as well as the channels through which one can request a review.
The Honourable Minister for Justice and the Acting Commissioner of Police reiterated their dedication to guaranteeing that Fiji’s legal system functions with impartiality, equity, and dignity for every person. They also recognized the value of community trust and its significance for efficient law enforcement and national security.
At the end of the meeting, it was decided a working group will be formulated to create policy proposals for enhancing the current system.
This will made up of representatives from the Fiji Police Force, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the office of the Solicitor General.
