
PUBLIC CONSULTATIONS ON ELECTORAL REFORMS
March 26, 2025Suva, 2 April 2025 – Thirty newly appointed Justices of the Peace (JPs) were officially sworn in yesterday by His Lordship Chief Justice Salesi Temo at the High Court 2 in Suva. This significant event marks another milestone in strengthening access to justice and legal services across Fiji.
The Ministry of Justice, in collaboration with the Judiciary, facilitated the appointment and induction of the new JPs. These individuals successfully completed their induction on 19th March 2025 and are now prepared to serve in their respective communities with commitment and integrity.
In his address, Chief Justice Salesi Temo welcomed the newly sworn-in JPs to the judiciary, emphasizing the critical role they play in the legal system. He highlighted that their responsibilities will include:
• Assisting law enforcement by signing search warrants and summons, sometimes at odd hours, reinforcing the need for JPs to be accessible.
• Witnessing oaths and affidavits, ensuring due process is upheld.
• Upholding the principles of independence, honesty, and integrity while maintaining a deep commitment to Fiji’s legal framework.
• Conducting visits to police stations to interview accused persons, ensuring their fair treatment and safeguarding human rights.
The Ministry of Justice acknowledges the invaluable contribution of Justices of the Peace in enhancing the administration of justice. Their work plays a vital role in maintaining the rule of law and ensuring that legal processes remain accessible to all Fijians.
